Trust, Revisited...

If you've been following my blog for a few years you might remember the post I wrote and Holly Richins filmed on TRUST.

(click here to watch the video)

I had intended it to be my last post, planning on dying shortly afterward. Well, two years later I'm still alive and as the pain still increases, I am still willingly trusting with all the faith I have that this is the Lord's plan and that the suffering I am enduring is purifying and sanctifying me.

From the book "Visions of Glory" as told to John Pontius he writes:
I learned by all this (suffering he endures) that it is through suffering that mortals learn compassion and endurance and faithfulness - but that there has to also be a great willingness to be purified and uplifted in this way. I understood that I would also be called to suffer so that I too could be purified, completed, and Christ-like when I left mortality, and I had to submit to this process willingly.

How can I not submit myself as a child would to their parent. I have to. As we approach my 5th holiday season since the first discovery of cancer I recognize that I have lost a lot of ground. I am never out of pain, even with all the opioid medicine I am given. People that are medically trained cannot believe my mind is so clear and coherent but no one is surprised that nerve pain causes my right arm to be constantly cold, numb and tingling. Typing takes a lot of time and effort so again, I am wondering if this will be my last post.

This birthday card is from my funny sister, Raquel.
There are two cartoon snakes on the front. One is singing Happy Birthday oh yeahhhh It's your birthday, ohhh yeahhh (rock style) and the other snake says

"How are you holding the guitar?"

The inside of the card says,

"Don't think too hard"

which made me laugh because my wonderful, patient sisters have been listening to me ask, repeatedly, two very good questions: "WHY I am still here on this earth?" and HOW is my body able to absorb all this cancer and not be overwhelmed by it? There seems to be no sure answer?

The 2017 Mutual Theme was "Ask"

https://www.lds.org/youth/theme/2017?lang=eng

Heavenly Father will answer us if we ask. It is His work and His glory and His pleasure to have us KNOW that we are His children and he cares about us and wants to answer our questions.
It has been said that Heavenly Father usually answers those prayers through the people in our lives and we will recognize those answers if we are listening.

"When you are alert, attentive and reverent
you are irresistible to the Lord"
- Michael Wilcox

This (life) is a training ground. A time of great struggle and growth. God is slowly, but with great care and intention, changing you into the person God has created for you to be. The process will hurt at times, and hurt deeply. But the person it is changing you into, in the end - strong, wise and able to face more than you ever imagined - THAT is exactly the person God wants for you to be.

The Loves of Debbie or Debbie's Loves

Family Photo
I've really missed teaching Seminary. It possibly might have been my favorite calling in the church. I LOVED it! Having a reason to study gospel principles so you can share what you've learned is a treasured blessing. It takes innate curiosity and incredible self discipline to study, just for the stake of studying... unless you go to BYU Education Week, always held the 3rd week of August. They bring experts in so many fields to the school, click here for schedule options -->  https://educationweek.byu.edu/ and then invite anyone with a sincere desire to come and fill their hearts and minds with knowledge. The whole campus is filled with an air of eager happiness and you can't help but be inspired to learn. I wanted to clone myself so I could attend multiple classes at once. It's something marvelous to experience if you can.

My next LOVE is my family. The day we returned from visiting our latest grandson I got a text from my sister, Megan, telling me to pack a sleeping bag, pillow, and whatever I would need for 2 days. What an unexpected surprise! She was taking me to spend the rest of Education Week with my mother and the rest of my sisters! We were so happy to be all together! When they planned it, they could not fathom that I would still be alive but I WAS alive, very capable of taking care of myself and thrilled to have this opportunity. Each of my sisters was happy to help wheelchair me to classes. I LOVE each one of them, my mother and brother, beyond expression.

The Williams Family - August 2018
One of the classes I LOVED was about evidences of the truth of the Book of Mormon by Brad Wilcox.
He started the class by reminding us that the Smithsonian Institution awarded Joseph Smith first place of the top 100 most influential religious leaders ever. The Book of Mormon is physical, tangible evidence that he was what he said he was. Many others established churches but no one produced a book they could be judged by. And judged Joseph has been, throughout the years, each time proving to be a seer and revelator in modern times. Click here to read his account.

Brother Wilcox had us say "The Book of Mormon" out loud a couple of times and then reminded us that this is not the way English is spoken. We would usually have said, "Mormon's Book" or "Nephi's plates" or "Laban's Sword" and yet the Book of Mormon, as translated by Joseph Smith, knew this fact about ancient Hebrew syntax? I don't think so. Notes from the Deseret News article about the class say "Wilcox pointed out that even the title, "The Book of Mormon," could be taken as evidence. Throughout the book, possessives are described this way: Plates of Brass. Sword of Laban. Priests of Noah. Brother of Jared. And so forth.
  • Then Wilcox gave an imaginary conversation with a non member:
  • "Look, maybe that's just the way Joseph Smith talked."
  • "Oh, yeah, sure. Sure, that is how Joseph Smith talked: 'Come into the house of my father. We can eat the food of my mother. We can play with the sister of my brother."
  • Why did he write that way then? It is how the people in the Book of Mormon talked.
  • John Bytheway, also presenting that day, discussed the differences in the ancient concepts of thieves and robbers. Thieves were punished by the community with restitution as part of the punishment. Robbers, however, were outside the community and dealt with by swift military action and immediate justice. The Book of Mormon makes this distinction — for example in how Laban announces that Laman is a robber and he will slay him (1 Nephi 3:13).
  • Wilcox then talked about the ancient site of Nahom — a place the Book of Mormon describes in the old world (1 Nephi 16:34). Archeological evidence — including an altar with the name inscribed upon it — was found in the 1990s, he said.
  • Bytheway noted how the description of Bountiful and its location match on-the-ground geography unknown to Joseph Smith and his contemporaries in America (1 Nephi 17: 5-7).

The first paragraph of the Book of Mormon is called a colophone, a paragraph establishing the credentials of the writer. See 1 Nephi 1:1  As early as the 6th century A.D., Egyptian scribes began their writings with colophones. I don't believe that Joseph Smith could have possibly known about colophones and that beginning the Book of Mormon with one would help prove its authenticity hundreds of years later. click here to read more about colophones

Here is a link to an article in LDS Living magazine with more evidences of the truth of the Book of Mormon and yet the author states it is only the tip of the iceberg that a serious study of evidences would unearth. Click here to read LDS Living Article

I know the Book of Mormon is true,
not because of physical evidences which keep coming to light, but because I have read it. I began reading it in high school and then in college I read it again, looking deeper into its meanings. I had one of the most spiritual confirmations of my life while reading it with "Jesus the Christ" by James E. Talmadge.

When my children were small I purchased a Book of Mormon study guide specifically to help me understand even more. I felt the fulfillment of the promise in the Beatitudes: bless those that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. I was filled with an unshakeable testimony of the Book of Mormon and understood why they called it the "keystone" of our religion. If the book is true then everything about it's existence is true. Read and try it for yourself. Moroni 10:4 has the promise for you. Moroni's Promise in 10:4

After General Conference in 1980 I felt an incredible urge to bring these promises into my home. Our family began regularly reading the Book of Mormon and I can testify that if we opened our hearts to these blessings and trusted in the Lord, we received the promises listed below:

The Lord's Promises to You
1.  The spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein.
2.  The spirit of reverence will increase.
3.  Mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow.
4.  The spirit of contention will depart.
5.  Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom.
6.  Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents.
7.  Righteousness will increase.
8.  Faith, hope, and charity--the pure love of Christ--will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness.
from this website. Click here for many other promises as well.

Now as I navigate the end of life and its "messiness" I stand steady and immoveable with a deep love and testimony of the Book of Mormon and our prophet to guide the way. Although the composer is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, this song by Bart Millard says the words of my heart:

Staying in the Process

From the Flower Fairies
So many blessings in one week! I am OVERWHELMED at the support and strength, courage and hope, the Lord is sending me right now. I want to thank Him for increasing my faith in Him. There just is no doubt He is there watching and working His ways in the smallest of details of our lives. Some blessings are so obvious such as the ones I'm going to write about now, but some come in fleeting instances that we may not notice at all unless we are paying attention.

Recently we were blessed to have dinner with our friends that call themselves "The Flower Fairies" because they keep me supplied with boldly, colorful bouquets. Ilene told us about her daughter's recent spiritual answer to an incredibly difficult life situation she finds herself in. Should she stay or should she go?

The answer was to, "Stay in the Process." What an interesting turn of phrase that came highlighted in my mind.
Stay in the process.

This last transition in my life could be termed a process and I could choose to "stay in the process" and continue living each day with patience and peace. Her church leader said to "squeeze every sanctifying, purifying thing you can out of what you are going through." Her words went straight to my heart. Obviously, I am still here for a reason. I'm supposed to be here! And I would be so wise to follow this incredible advice.

Family Photo
I woke up one day to a HUGE sign in my yard saying "HAPPY WEDNESDAY DEBBIE" in another kind of bouquet of bold, colorful letters. Our dear friends Scott and Kathi Stanford had arranged this uplifting message for us to find. It is so fitting. This is what we do. We take life one day at a time... sometimes one hour at a time. Make it a happy Wednesday, Debbie. Choose to.

Chris and Caylee Riding

This week I received another incredible blessing that caused the tears to flow and flow and flow. For an hour I could not stop crying after watching a video my adorable nephew Chris Riding made for me. He emailed his cousins and asked them to record what they loved about me and send it to him as soon as possible. He combined them all in a tribute that I will treasure forever! Hearing compliments that I don't deserve but would sincerely desire to live up to gave me a reason to aspire to be the daughter of God they describe.

Family Photo
My sweet husband brought me this beautiful bouquet of sunflowers after a hike in the hills behind our home. Did you know that sunflower blossoms keep their faces toward the sun the whole day? Morning until night they hold their focus. We always think of the "S O N" when we see them and I knew exactly what he meant by gathering this beautiful bunch. And I love him for it. I want to keep my face toward the Son of God the WHOLE DAY! I want people to see His light reflected in my countenance. I pray blessings on all the people who make my life so very, very good.
Endless blessings....

Dear Huntsman Cancer Center, I'm not dead!

Dear Huntsman Cancer Center,

I'm not dead! Everyone there predicted I would be gone by July 1st and now it's the 31st and I'm still here on earth!!!!

Do you remember that I got "discharged" to hospice in January? Well, thanks to the tender care of my husband, family and friends I'm still living a really good life. Although the spring months were difficult, I was very blessed to have constant daily care. For reasons known only to God I have been able to steadily improve my ability to take care of myself. Lately I've been able to visit my children that live a plane ride away! We have been cautiously optimistically planning other things to look forward to.

I have to say that I sleep a lot. I can't drive because of all the meds I'm on and I need a wheelchair to get very far but those are small prices to pay! I don't have to look very far to find someone that has it worse off than I do. I feel like I have multiple blessings!

PRAISE THE LORD! THANK THE LORD!
Love, Debbie Beus

My friend, Kirsi Jarvis, posted the picture below and I burst into tears when I saw it. I wore my hair in a ponytail in my prime years and immediately saw myself hugging my Savior in this image. I will bow down first, overwhelmed with tears when I see him, but hopefully a hug will follow.

Honored To Be A Mom

Got this picture and quote from my eldest son on Mother's Day.

"A mother is the one who stands in the river for her children."
Makes me think of you Mom.
-Chris Beus

PC: Chris Beus

NOTHING in the world makes me feel happier than knowing I'm a mother to a little flock,
who grew up to be AMAZING! So grateful I was able to help them cross the river!

"Remember that the greatest of all the blessings of the Lord
come through and are given to righteous families.
Women who make a house a home
make a far greater contribution to society
than those who command large armies
or stand at the head of impressive corporations.
Who can put a price tag on the influence a mother has on her children,
a grandmother on her posterity,
or aunts and sisters on their extended family?"

Find Rest

Today I just want to thank my Heavenly Father for the amazing body He's given me to travel through mortality with! It's incredible! Tumors the size of ping pong balls growing in my neck, left arm and leg are clearly visible. They don't bother me as much as my right hand, swollen with edema and constantly tingling with neuropathy does. Although the latest scans show multiple tumors, ranging in size from peas to plums throughout my organs and soft tissue, the King of causing pain is the throbbing tumor in my right hip. Mercifully, the doctor is able to mitigate the pain and help me "find rest" with stronger meds.  Assuring me there is no limit to how high we can go, he confesses that he is shocked and surprised that I am still mentally clear thinking and coherent at the present dosage. Fortunately, I can still care for my physical needs, allowing me to having hospice at home and be cared for by my sisters and children. I'm also grateful for wheelchairs and walkers and drivers as I navigate the world of disabilities. I've learned that everyone is so kind.

In spite of my body's amazing ability to recover and adapt to pain, the laws of nature irrevocably decree that some day I will finally slip through death's door and this trial will end.  Most will say, "Oh, I'm so happy for her!" and some will even say, "Well, it's about time!" ...but I can tell you that NO ONE will feel more grateful that the roller coaster of suffering is over than I will. I'm so grateful for the knowledge that even though my spirit and body will be separated for a time, because of Jesus Christ and the Atonement, they will be reunited in a celestial, immortal being that I will consider the biggest blessing and miracle of all.

My prayers are full of gratitude for the wonderful time I've had with family and friends. Last President's Day we were ALL here and had the opportunity to take a complete (for now, March 2018) family picture.

I ask for heaven's blessings for all those who pray for me and those who are struggling with problems and those who lead the nations and those who lead our church and those who lead children. I NEVER pray that my life will be extended and yet still... here I am?!?! Another Easter celebrated with family! Sing Hallelujah! I love this version by Kenneth Cope...

When I'm SO tired of riding this roller coaster
I like to listen to Find Rest
Put your HOPE in God.

Francesca Battistelli

Find Rest Lyrics
He never sleeps, He never slumbers
He's been awake at every hour
No tear catches Him by surprise
He's never lost, He never runs out
He never lives in the shadows of doubt
No fear catches Him by surprise

[Chorus:]
Find rest my soul
Put your hope in God
Put your hope, put your hope in God

He always is, He always will be
He always has been everything I need
How can this be catching me by surprise
He's ever strong, He's ever faithful
His love is real, now nothing is impossible
'Cause nothing catches Him by surprise

[Chorus]

I close my eyes, and I can see
The arms of mercy holding me
I close my eyes, and I can see
The arms of Jesus holding me

[Chorus]

Put your hope in God
Put your hope in God

You Are Never Alone

"You're so lucky to have me today!" the CT tech said as she bustled in. She was SO sure she could get an IV in that I felt reassured too. I have to fast the night before and drink that awful tasting contrast and a LOT of water to hydrate my veins when I prepare for CT scans. Her face quickly changed from confidence to chagrin as she tried... twice... unsuccessfully to get an IV in. She brought in help, my friend Diane! My heart lifted because Diane never had a problem when I was getting infusions during chemotherapy.

Oh yay! No more painful digging around for a working vein! But... no. After two excruciating unsuccessful tries and not wanting to hurt me any more, Diane bailed too, leaving me with a bruised and throbbing arm.  I didn't know what to think when they both left the room. I sat there, feeling so alone and uncertain as the minutes ticked by without anyone coming to tell me what was happening. My heart sank and tears came to my eyes just thinking about having to go through the prep again and come back another day. How long, oh Lord? How long will I be going through these things?

In the stillness and quiet I sensed someone nearby. A voice that I almost recognized, like a sweet 80 year old friend from the past, spoke in my right ear, "This is just the enduring part." A little stunned,
I couldn't stop the tears. I had been so worried about needing more surgeries or possible disasters that would traumatize me and with that phrase, I felt reassured that nothing horrible was going to happen but MOST importantly, that I wasn't alone.

Suddenly a brand new tech with warm brown eyes and a cheerful smile came around the corner. She filled a glove with hot water and put it on the back of my hand and calmly held it there for about 5 minutes without speaking. At one point she put her forehead down on our hands and I wondered, but didn't ask, "Are you praying too?"

Beginners luck!?!?! We can only guess why, but the needle went in smoothly and we were in business. I wouldn't have to go home and start over another day. Hallelujah!

I don't have to deal with CTs any more, just the constant guessing game of pain management as the tumors continue to grow... the "enduring part"... but I wanted to record this experience for anyone who wonders if they've been forgotten. You haven't. There are angels everywhere, those we can see and those we can't, but we are never alone. Why not believe?

Love Is My Currency - Happy Valentine's Day 2018

I've come to the end of the road, the medical road that is. Everything that could be medically done, has been done. We just have to manage the pain and side effects of the cancer until it wins. My angel husband is my hospice caregiver and I can't thank him enough for choosing me to be his Valentine over 40 years ago. I also can't apologize enough for the roughness of the road he has had to walk with me. I pray for his strength every day.

Celebrating my last day of radiation, my friend and I went to Hugs, my favorite place to get frozen drinks. This sweet young woman with a beautiful smile has created whatever drink sounds good to me for the last couple months when I stop by. Today, Danielle made me a frozen strawberry lemonade and without even knowing it was my last day, wouldn't let me pay for our order! What a great example of an earthly angel sharing God's love! I LOVE HER BACK!

My 'graduation' present from Huntsman radiation was a hand tied blanket from Mrs. Badgers 5th grade classroom.

"Nothing can dim the light that shines from within"
- Maya Angelou

was a very fitting quote. Just look at Danielle's face to see her light!

Same with my very creative angel friend Lorraine. She read my blog and sent a homemade Valentine card to brighten my day. It did! The amazing thing about Lorraine is that her husband has been fighting cancer too! About exactly the same length of time! We have shared thoughts and encouragement along the way, rejoicing in the extra time we've been given and sharing the sorrows along the way as well. She knows first hand what demons we've faced. It feels good to have her company, along with the many other friends who have faced terrific uphill battles with unflinching courage. I have been very blessed to love and be loved by some of the finest people on the planet.

Coming out of Target on Valentine's Day 2017
I met an earthly angel passing out "love" to the passersby. She handed me a card that said, "Be Love" Just that... Be love. She's speaking my language! Giving love is all I can do sometimes!

It has been many years since I've had a paycheck for the work I do... and I'm always excited on those rare occasions when I have cash in my wallet... but it seems I have an unlimited supply of love and it doesn't matter how much love I extend, when I open my heart, there is always more!

In the Doctrine and Covenants 76:52--60 God says that he will shed the light of the Holy Spirit of Promise over ALL who are just and true, that He will cleanse ALL who obey and come unto Him. (v. 55) "They are they into whose hands the Father has given ALL things. (v. 59) "Wherefore ALL things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come.

How can Heavenly Father give us ALL, ALL that He has? We live in a "finite" world. It is hard for our mortal minds to comprehend this principle because there is a beginning and an end to almost everything we know. There is only so much of this world's goods so we exchange our money for the material things we needThere is only so much time in a day so we watch the clock as we stand in line and take our turn.

My homemade peach pie!

There is only so much pie for dessert! We cut the pie into even pieces and serve to all present but imagine there is NO END to the pies we have! Imagine that time, a 24 hour day as we know it, doesn't exist. Now THAT will be heaven.

Love is my unending currency... Divinely bestowed... The BEST! Although my time on this earth is becoming very limited, Heavenly Father has filled my heart over and over again... with love. I've been given sincere love in my heart for my family, friends and even those who are difficult to love. I often pray before going somewhere that I can bring God's love with me in a way that the people I interact with can feel God's love for them THROUGH me.

The wonderful thing is that I have a lot of people in my life who feel the same way! Who could be happier? What job could be better? How long can I do this? Why not believe I can do this long as it takes.... that's the beauty of it. As long as it takes...

New Year Resolutions: What's your BAE?

Go not after other gods to serve them,
and to worship them,
and provoke me not to anger
with the works of your hands"
(Jeremiah 25:4-7)

Do these pictures look familiar?
In almost any public place these days, you see people looking at their phones...

The New Testament records that when the apostles asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was He said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God." We can also get a clue to the most important commandment by what God chose to list as the FIRST of the Ten Commandments. It is a timeless guideline about our proper relationship to God. "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me."

"Whatever thing a man sets his heart and his trust in most is his god;
and if his god doesn’t also happen to be the true and living God of Israel,
that man is laboring in idolatry."
-Spencer W. Kimball

Technology is AMAZING! A gift in our lives... or a curse depending on how we use it... or allow it to "use" us. According to Pres. Kimball's quote above, are we "laboring in idolatry" by "worshipping" our devices during our idle time? A study by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers found the average cell phone user actually checks their phone up to 150 times per day. In their annual Internet Trends report carried out in May 2017, the researchers narrowed the results down. It found that people check their phones, on average, 23 times a day for messaging, 22 times for voice calls and 18 times to get the time. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2449632

An electronic device can open a window on the world. We can find invitations for good and for evil, or simply an invitation for comparison -  creating a sense of dissatisfaction with our life and a longing for the life people post about?
Without electricity, a cell phone or iPad is just a piece of lifeless plastic that "waxes old" and become obsolete soon. Just like the idols of the Old Testament, they cannot hear or see and have no power.

How do we do that?
How do we keep ourselves from provoking God to anger
and SHOW our love for God with our actions, not just words?

There is a currently popular term
"BAE"
 It means Before Anyone Else

For me, it means a commitment to read my scriptures BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE on my phone when I check it in the morning. It means to constantly redirect my thoughts to Jesus Christ and express gratitude for His gift of the Atonement and repentance. It means reminding myself to put my phone down when I'm with people, to look at them and enjoy the precious time we have together. It's a difficult balancing act for me when I'm with my grandchildren because I also want to take pictures to record the time to enjoy later when I'm not with them. The New Year seems like a good time to recommit to reconnect as often as possible with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE....

"For where your treasure is...
there shall your heart be also."

I don't know why
I got a front row seat
To the longest wait
And I just can't see
Past the things I pray
Today
But when I fix my eyes
on all that You are
Then every doubt I feel
Deep in my heart
Grows strangely dim
...
I don't know, I don't know
What tomorrow may hold
But I know, but I know
That You're holding it all....

Favorite Quotes from Conference Oct 2017

General Women's Conference Notes Oct 2017

Sharon EubankMuch of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.
The restored gospel is recognizably well defined. But we have to be distinct about how we follow it. Just as Jessica practiced swimming, we need to practice living the gospel before the emergency so that, unafraid, we will be strong enough to help when others are being swept away by the current.

Neill F. Marriott: We can lose our trusting connection to God if trials drive us to distraction instead of sending us to our knees.
We are divinely designed to give love and be loved, and the deepest love comes when we are one with God.
When we give our heart to the Father and the Son, we change our world—even if circumstances around us do not change. We draw closer to Heavenly Father and feel His tender acceptance of our efforts to be true disciples of Christ. Our discernment, confidence, and faith increase.

Joy D. Jones:
Don't confuse "worth" and "worthiness"
Comparison is the thief of joy!

Pres Dieter F Uchtdorf : The Three Sisters: (Mad, Sad, and Glad)
You have the spiritual DNA of God. You have unique gifts that originated in your spiritual creation and that were developed during the vast span of your premortal life.
Choosing this path of discipleship will lead to untold happiness and fulfillment of your divine nature. ... It will not be easy. It will require the very best that you have—all your intelligence, creativity, faith, integrity, strength, determination, and love. But one day you will look back upon your efforts, and oh, how grateful you will be that you remained strong, that you believed, and that you did not depart from the path.

Pres Dieter F Uchtdorf
Following the Savior will not remove all of your trials. However, it will remove the barriers between you and the help your Heavenly Father wants to give you. God will be with you. He will direct your steps. He will walk beside you and even carry you when your need is greatest.
No, they (the early church leaders) were not perfect, but how encouraging it is to know that God was able to use them anyway. He knew their strengths and weaknesses, and He gave them the extraordinary opportunity to contribute a verse or a melody to the glorious anthem of the Restoration.

No one else is responsible for your personal journey. The Savior will help you and prepare the way before you, but the commitment to follow Him and keep His commandments must come from you. That is your sole burden, your sole privilege.

Bonnie Oscarson: We live in a culture where more and more we are focused on the small, little screen in our hands than we are on the people around us. We have substituted texting and tweeting for actually looking someone in the eye and smiling or, even rarer, having a face-to-face conversation.
As amazing as modern technology can be for spreading the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ and helping us stay connected to family and friends, if we are not vigilant in how we use our personal devices, we too can begin to turn inward and forget that the essence of living the gospel is service.
Heavenly Father may have placed those who need us closest to us, knowing that we are best suited to meet their needs.
Elder D. Todd Christofferson has taught, “A major reason the Lord has a church is to create a community of Saints that will sustain one another in the ‘strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life.’” He goes on to say, “This religion is not concerned only with self; rather, we are all called to serve. We are the eyes, hands, head, feet, and other members of the body of Christ.”5
Ask your Heavenly Father to show you those around you who need your help and to inspire you on how to best serve them. Remember that the Savior most often ministered to one person at a time.

Dallin H. Oaks: We grow and mature spiritually by choosing to obey God’s commandments in a succession of right choices.
I testify that the proclamation on the family is a statement of eternal truth, the will of the Lord for His children who seek eternal life. It has been the basis of Church teaching and practice for the last 22 years and will continue so for the future. Consider it as such, teach it, live by it, and you will be blessed as you press forward toward eternal life.

John C Pingree: Some of us question whether Heavenly Father can use us to make important contributions. But remember, He has always used ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
Focus on others, discover and develop spiritual gifts, make use of adversity, rely on God, beware of Satan's tricks.

D Todd Christofferson: But figuratively eating His flesh and drinking His blood has a further meaning, and that is to internalize the qualities and character of Christ, putting off the natural man and becoming Saints “through the atonement of Christ the Lord.”16 As we partake of the sacramental bread and water each week, we would do well to consider how fully and completely we must incorporate His character and the pattern of His sinless life into our life and being.
As happened with my friend in his revelatory dream, God will show us our flaws and failings, but He will also help us turn weakness into strength.34 If we sincerely ask, “What lack I yet?”35 He will not leave us to guess, but in love He will answer for the sake of our happiness. And He will give us hope.It is a consuming endeavor, and it would be terribly daunting if in our striving for holiness we were alone. The glorious truth is we are not alone. We have the love of God, the grace of Christ, the comfort and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the fellowship and encouragement of fellow Saints in the body of Christ.
Jeffrey R. Holland: Perfect Eventually Our only hope for true perfection is in receiving it as a gift from heaven—we can’t “earn” it. Thus, the grace of Christ offers us not only salvation from sorrow and sin and death but also salvation from our own persistent self-criticism. If we persevere, then somewhere in eternity our refinement will be finished and complete—which is the New Testament meaning of perfection.14
Gary E Stevenson: Look through a gospel lens and be vigilant not to allow insignificant and inconsequential matters in life to obscure your eternal view of the great plan of happiness. In short, don’t let life’s distractions eclipse heaven’s light.

Stephen W Owen: In the story of the Prodigal Son, imagine how the story would be different if he had given up. But faith kept him moving, and faith kept his father watching and waiting patiently, until finally: he came home.
The Savior’s redeeming power ... will steady our feet, expand our vision, and deepen our resolve to keep moving forward, step by step, until that glorious day when we finally return to our heavenly home and hear our Father in Heaven say to us, “Well done.”

Quentin L Cook: Some misuse authenticity as a celebration of the natural man and qualities that are the opposite of humility, kindness, mercy, forgiveness, and civility. We can celebrate our individual uniqueness as children of God without using authenticity as an excuse for un-Christlike behavior.

Ronald A Rasband: The Lord’s hand is guiding you. By “divine design,” He is in the small details of your life as well as the major milestones.

O Vincent Halek: My prayer for each of us is a plea to have the heart to bear our burdens, make necessary sacrifices, and have the will to do and to give. I promise that the Lord will not leave you wanting. The heart of the widow is filled with thanksgiving that the Savior was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief”4 so that we would not need to taste the “bitter cup.”5 In spite of our weaknesses and failings, and because of them, He continues to offer His hands, which were pierced for our sakes. He will lift us up if we are willing to come into the light of His gospel, embrace Him, and allow Him to fill our “want.”

Pres Russell M Nelson: I opened it to 3 Nephi chapter 11, and together the king and I read the Savior’s sermon to the Nephites. I then presented the copy of the Book of Mormon to him. His response lodged in my mind and heart forever: “You could have given me diamonds or rubies, but nothing is more precious to me than this additional knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Dale G Renlund: An Aaronic Priesthood holder covenants to avoid evil, help others be reconciled to God, and prepare to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood.9 These sacred responsibilities are fulfilled as he teaches, baptizes, strengthens Church members, and invites others to accept the gospel. These are his “rocket” functions. In return, God promises hope, forgiveness, the ministering of angels, and the keys of the gospel of repentance and baptism.10
A Melchizedek Priesthood holder covenants to fulfill the responsibilities associated with the Aaronic Priesthood and to magnify his calling in the Melchizedek Priesthood.11 He does so by keeping the commandments associated with the covenant. These commandments include giving “diligent heed to the words of eternal life” by living by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God,12bearing testimony of Jesus Christ and His latter-day work,13 not boasting of himself,14 and becoming the Savior’s friend, trusting Him as a friend would. In return, God promises that a Melchizedek Priesthood holder will receive keys to understand the mysteries of God. He will become perfect so that he can stand in the presence of God. He will be able to fulfill his role in the work of salvation. Jesus Christ will prepare the way before the priesthood holder and will be with him. The Holy Ghost will be in the priesthood holder’s heart, and angels will bear him up. His body will be strengthened and renewed. He will become heir to the blessings of Abraham and, along with his wife, joint-heir with Jesus Christ to Heavenly Father’s kingdom.16 These are “exceeding great and precious promises.”17 No greater promises can be imagined. To each man who receives the Melchizedek Priesthood, God affirms His covenant promises with an oath.18 This oath pertains only to the Melchizedek Priesthood,19and it is God who swears the oath, not the priesthood holder.20 Because this unique situation involves His divine power and authority, God uses an oath, employing the most forceful language He can, to assure us of the binding and irreversible nature of His promises.
David F Evans: Each of us has a personal responsibility to do what is necessary to obtain and keep a strong testimony.
Richard J Maynes: Being a man of integrity simply means your intentions, as well as your actions, are pure and righteous in all aspects of your life, both in public and in private. With each decision we make, we either merit more of God’s trust or diminish His trust.
Both of my daughters, independently, considered the blessing of peace in the home to be a direct consequence of having a husband they could trust.

Deiter F Uchtdorf: Whatever causes our spiritual ailments, they all have one thing in common: the absence of divine light.
Darkness reduces our ability to see clearly. It dims our vision of that which was at one time plain and clear. When we are in darkness, we are more likely to make poor choices because we cannot see dangers in our path. When we are in darkness, we are more likely to lose hope because we cannot see the peace and joy that await us if we just keep pressing forward. Darkness is not an indication that there is no light. Most often, it simply means we’re not in the right place to receive the light. During the recent solar eclipse, many made great efforts to get into the narrow band of a shadow created by the moon in the middle of a bright sunny day. In a very similar way, spiritual light continually shines upon all of God’s creation. Satan will make every effort to create a shadow or get us into a shadow of our own making. He will coerce us to create our own eclipse; he will push us into the darkness of his cavern. Brethren, it is up to us to be in the right place to see the divine light and truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every time you turn your hearts to God in humble prayer, you experience His light. Every time you seek His word and will in the scriptures, the light grows in brightness. Every time you notice someone in need and sacrifice your own comfort to reach out in love, the light expands and swells. Every time you reject temptation and choose purity, every time you seek or extend forgiveness, every time you courageously testify of truth, the light chases away darkness and attracts others who are also seeking light and truth.
Henry B Eyring: The Lord’s leadership of His Church requires great and steady faith from all who serve Him on earth. Your leader in the Lord’s Church may seem to you weak and human or may appear to you strong and inspired. The fact is that every leader is a mixture of those traits and more. What helps servants of the Lord who are called to lead us is when we can see them as the Lord did when He called them.
Jean B Bingham: Because of the power He gives us as we are obedient, we are able to become more than we ever could on our own. We may not understand completely how, but each of us who has felt faith in Christ increase has also received a greater understanding of our divine identity and purpose, leading us to make choices that are consistent with that knowledge.
Daily reading of scriptures and pondering the words of living prophets, engaging in meaningful personal prayer, mindfully partaking of the sacrament each week, giving service as the Savior would—each of these simple activities becomes a building block for a joyful life.

Donald A Hallstrom: A critical question to ponder is “Where do we place our faith?” Is our faith focused on simply wanting to be relieved of pain and suffering, or is it firmly centered on God the Father and His holy plan and in Jesus the Christ and His Atonement? Faith in the Father and the Son allows us to understand and accept Their will as we prepare for eternity.

David A Bednar: On His holy day, our thoughts, actions, and demeanor are signs we give to God and an indicator of our love for Him.
Importantly, a home should be the ultimate combination of time and spacewherein individuals and families remember most effectively God’s great and precious promises.

W Christopher Waddell: The Atonement of Jesus Christ provides the ultimate corrective and healing measures to every wounded body, damaged spirit, and broken heart.
In addition to paying the price and suffering for our sins, Jesus Christ also walked every path, dealt with every challenge, faced every hurt—physical, emotional, or spiritual—that we will ever encounter in mortality.
In this mortal experience, we cannot control all that happens to us, but we have absolute control over how we respond to the changes in our lives. This does not imply that the challenges and trials we face are of no consequence and easily handled or dealt with. It does not imply that we will be free from pain or heartache. But it does mean that there is cause for hope and that due to the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can move forward and find better days—even days full of joy, light, and happiness.

W Craig Zwick: We live in a world that feeds on comparisons, labeling, and criticism. Instead of seeing through the lens of social media, we need to look inward for the godly attributes to which we each lay claim. These godly qualities and longings cannot be posted on Pinterest or Instagram.
To accept and love others does not mean we must embrace their ideas. Obviously, truth mandates our highest allegiance, though it should never be a barrier to kindness. Truly loving others requires the ongoing practice of accepting the best efforts of people whose life experiences and limitations we may never fully know. Looking beyond what we can see requires conscious focus on the Savior.
Henry B Eyring: Heeding President Monson’s counsel has had two other wonderful effects on me: First, the Spirit he promised has produced a sense of optimism about what lies ahead, even as the commotion in the world seems to increase. And, second, the Lord has given me—and you—an even greater feeling of His love for those in distress. We have felt an increase in the desire to go to the rescue of others. That desire has been at the heart of President Monson’s ministry and teaching. I testify that the Lord goes before your face whenever you are on His errand. Sometimes you will be the angel the Lord sends to bear others up. Sometimes you will be the one surrounded by angels who bear you up. But always you will have His Spirit to be in your heart, as you have been promised in every sacrament service. You have only to keep His commandments. The best days are ahead for the kingdom of God on the earth. Opposition will strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, as it has since the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Faith always defeats fear. Standing together produces unity. And your prayers for those in need are heard and answered by a loving God. He neither slumbers nor does He sleep.
M Russell Ballard: Stay on the gospel path by having “faith in every footstep” so you can return safely back to the presence of Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is our precious Savior. He is the Redeemer of the world. We must honor His sacred name and not misuse it in any way, always striving to keep His commandments. If we do so, He will bless us and lead us safely home.
Ted R Callister: The Book of Mormon is one of God’s priceless gifts to us. It is both sword and shield—it sends the word of God into battle to fight for the hearts of the just and serves as an arch defender of the truth. As Saints, we have not only the privilege to defend the Book of Mormon but also the opportunity to take the offense—to preach with power its divine doctrine and bear testimony of its crowning witness of Jesus Christ.
Joni L. Koch: Brothers and sisters, we have no right to portray anybody, including from our Church circle, as a badly finished product! Rather, our words about our fellow beings should reflect our belief in Jesus Christ and His Atonement and that, in Him and through Him, we can always change for the better!
Stanley G. Ellis: Brothers and sisters, we can have the faith to trust Him! He wants what is best for us (see Moses 1:39). He will answer our prayers (see D&C 112:10). He will keep His promises (see D&C 1:38). He has the power to keep those promises (see Alma 37:16). He knows everything! And most important, He knows what is best (see Isaiah 55:8–9)
Adilson de Paula Parella: The missionaries also taught us God’s plan of happiness and answered our family’s questions about religion. They taught us that families truly can be together after this life as father, mother, and sons and daughters. Our family was baptized. The road to changing old habits, giving up traditions, and becoming active members of the Church was at times bumpy. But because of the mercy and love of God and with the help of many leaders and members, we made it through the first challenging years.
Ian S. Ardern: The greater the light in our lives, the fewer the shadows. However, even in an abundance of light, we are exposed to people and comments that misrepresent our beliefs and try our faith.
Jose L. Alonso: The next day was very difficult for us as we were all completely overwhelmed with grief. I fell to my knees and prayed the most sincere prayer I had ever offered. I asked Heavenly Father in the name of my Savior to take away my overwhelming grief. He did so.
Neil L. Anderson: After the Savior’s Crucifixion, He appeared only to those ‘who had been faithful in the testimony of [Him] while they lived in mortality.’ [D&C 138:12.] Those ‘who rejected the testimonies … of the … prophets [could not] behold [the Savior’s] presence, nor look upon his face.’ [D&C 138:21.] … Our faith prepares us to be in the presence of the Lord.”
